Alticor One by One Campaign for Children
- The boat was actually quite a distance over marshland
- So the kids in life jackets had to cross over open water to get to
school.
In each region of the world, we find the best way
to make a difference in the lives of children.
- My name is Walt Parker. I'm a writer, I've traveled around the world for
the last couple of years visiting One by One children's projects for
Alticor.
- There are dozens of these projects – all reflecting a world of kids in need.
Half the world's poor are children.
- No two are exactly alike. Neither are the responses by Amway and Quixtar
business owners, sales reps and employees.
More than 121 million children do not have access
to the most basic education.
- What these people do share is a belief that children deserve a decent
start in life.
That's why we created the One by One Campaign
for Children.
- And that acting is far more important than just talking or worrying
about it.
We believe it's our responsibility to give back
to the communities where we do business.
- These little kids attend a boat school in rural China, their parents are
poor fisherman.
- Amway China people in NanJing heard that the boat school might close,
so they passed the hat and brought some money and supplies for Mr. Hu,
the founder of the school and he was able to keep the boat afloat.
Thanks to Operation Smile, we've helped mend
1,200 children in Tailand and China with cleft lip or palates.
- One by one volunteers sometimes donate money but they also offer their
time and labor and in the process, they share their hearts as well.
Amway India helps put Braille textbooks in the
hands of the country's nearly two million blind children.
- One place I'll never forget is the school for the blind in Mumbai,
India, where they have a press that makes Braille schoolbooks.
Amway Korea constructs playgrounds for rural schools.
- Families of Amway employees and business owners have raised millions
of dollars every year for projects like these.
In the U.S., Quixtar is a national sponsor of
Easter Seals, raising funds for children with disabilities.
- People wonder why Alticor is so focused on children. It's a natural.
They're in the business of opportunity and who needs that more than the
world's kids.
In helping the children, our volunteers find that
they reap rewards of the heart.
- In Grand Rapids, for example, near company headquarters. Alticor
employees spend thousands of hours every year helping out at an inner
city school.
Since the program launched, we have given more
than US$39 million worldwide.
- As you can see, there's no playbook for One by One, no script. The
projects are big and small.
We have provided hope and opportunity to
5 million children.
- They start at the grassroots, in corporate offices and every place
in between... wherever somebody sees a need.
Our employees and independent business owners
have volunteered 606,000 hours.
- I've come to realize its kind of fitting that One by One grew out
of Alticor. An organization of more than three million people.
Through One by One, we make a real, lasting
difference, making life better for children around the world.
- Their eyes and ears are on practically every street corner in the world.
They know firsthand where the needs are…and how to make a difference.
